I am a Black Card holder (AMEX calls it their Centurian Card) and no matter what anyone says, I get upgrades on airlines and hotels almost all the time everywhere I go. Card holders get free membership into Virgin Atlantic's Gold Flying Club which allows you into their great airline lounges. Upgrades at all Holiday Inn's and Intercontinentals because you get a free membership into priorityclub.com - Free upgrades on Delta, US Airways which if you fly a lot as I do, and stay at hotels, the upgrades each year are so well worth the $2500 a year fee. One overseas airline upgrade to 1st class pays that fee. I love this card.

John, many people will agree with you that the card isn't worth the annual fee, although some cardholders may argue that this card grants them respect that doesn't come with any other cards. Thank you for your comment.

This card it not worth the yearly fee, you get the same benifits with the platinum card and even the same travel agents to assist you The black card is Amex best rip off and foolish people with large egos are being taken for a ride cut up the card it is worthless

Ann, it all boils down to creditworthiness. Lenders want to make sure that they are lending large amounts to people who are most likely to pay it back. Thank you for your comment.

Is this the American caste system? Not open as it is in India, neverthess it exists (behind closed doors). All humans are created equal unless money is concerned. Great democratic ideals! Founding fathers and brothers, what do you think of all this?

Des..

Sorry to tell you this.. YOU ARE WRONG !! You have to be invited to join.

-- Contributed by: gabriel

Des, thanks for the information!

-- Contributed by: Tamsen Butler

You don't have to wait for an invitation for this card, all you have to do do is ensure that you spend at least $250,000 per year with your AmEx, be willing to pay the fees, and call and ask them to upgrade you.

-- Contributed by: Des

Munetaka, you'll have to wait for an invitation to apply for this card. You may want to look into alternative consolidation options.

I have interest with this black card to consolidate cards .

Mary,

American Express does not release their exact requirements for the "Black Card"; but, we can assume that the qualifications involve a high income level and a very good credit rating.

Thanks for your question.

Big Daddy,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, you are right, Centurion cardholders are required to pay their card balances monthly -- no accumulated credit on this card.

-- Contributed by: SusanWeber

Ladyboss... Holders of the Centurion card must pay their balances in full each month. They are not the problem with the economy. People who dont know the difference between a want and a need that charge are the problem.

-- Contributed by: Big Daddy

Ladyboss,

There seems to be a need for high end credit cards regardless of the stte of the economy!

Thanks for your comment.

This is why we are in and economic crisis!

need to know if i'm eligable for black card

-- Contributed by: sana saadeldin

Dear G-reg,

The American Express Centurion® Card, commonly called the Black Card, is a "by invitation" card. They don't accept applications. You would be eligible for an invitation if you have had a American Express Platinum Card for at least one year, have spent at least $250,000 using your card and have a good repayment record with American Express.

If you are eligible for the card, but have not received your invitation from American Express, just give them a call. Their customer service number is available on their website (link in the article above).

Who knows, maybe your invitation was lost in the mail!

Thank you for your question and for visiting LoveToKnow Credit Cards.
