Walmart MoneyCard

From LoveToKnow Creditcards

The Walmart MoneyCard is a prepaid Visa debit card issued by GE Money Bank that allows people to pay with “plastic” without having to worry about getting caught up in debt.

About the Card

This card was also introduced as a way to serve customers who do not hold traditional bank accounts. The card is accepted at both brick and mortar retailers and for online shopping. It can also be used to pay bills and is good at ATMs that accept Visa. Customers may run the card through the reader as either a debit or credit transaction, just like with a Visa check card.

Getting a Walmart MoneyCard

Anyone over 18 can purchase a Walmart MoneyCard for a small fee at hundreds of Walmarts across the country. There is no credit check needed. Note that minors are barred from registering the cards, so they do not make the best birthday or holiday gifts.

Each Walmart MoneyCard package contains a temporary card that must be loaded with at least $20 at the time of purchase. The maximum initial amount is $500 unless the person is cashing a check for a higher amount, and then the limit is $1,500. No MoneyCard can hold more than $3,000 at any time.

Once the consumer has purchased a MoneyCard, he or she needs to officially activate it by going to walmartmoneycard.com or calling 877-965-7848. Walmart will require some personal information including:

  • The person’s name
  • Address
  • Social Security number

This information is needed to comply with counterterrorism laws. Assuming everything checks out, the company will mail the consumer a permanent card within the next couple weeks. If there is a problem, Walmart will refund the money on the card as long as the receipt is still available.

Reloading the Card

Walmart MoneyCards are reloadable an unlimited amount of times. There are several ways that a person can do so:

  • Taking cash to the nearest Walmart or accessing cash via a debit card
  • Bringing a payroll or government check to Walmart and asking to have the money sent to the card
  • Buying a Green Dot Financial Network MoneyPak from any participating retailer
  • Having an employer send money via direct deposit

Note that Walmart may charge a fee for reloading the card or cashing a check.

MoneyCard Online

Once customers registere a MoneyCard they have complete access to Walmart’s MoneyCard website. Cardholders can view a card’s balance at any time as well as sign up for e-mail or SMS alerts to help with weekly or monthly budgeting. All the individual has to do is log in with his or her card number, expiration date and password. Mailed statements are also available by request.

Card Protection

The Walmart MoneyCard is backed by Visa’s Zero Liability Policy, which helps the consumer if the card is lost or stolen. Unlike with cash, the card and its value can be replaced. There are certain restrictions that can be found in the cardholder agreement. For example, Walmart charges a fee to replace lost cards.

Considerations

MoneyCards are not available in all states. They are also not the best choice for all consumers since they do come with several fees attached that are not present on traditional gift cards or debit cards. Additionally, they are not appropriate for parents to give to their children. It’s important not to pick up one of these cards simply as an impulse purchase. Instead people need to consider if they are the best financial option overall.

What a complete joke. The website says clearly that you can have more than one card, but if you register more than one card, you are flagged. Without notice. My check will be in the mail within 7 to 10 business days. At that time no one said I couldn't register a new card. I go out, buy a card, place $250 on it and go home to register. Nope, denied. Flagged. Again, my $250 is in the mail. No other explanation. Amazing.
