Walmart gift cards are available for purchase online in denominations starting at $10 all the way up to $2,500. Cards can also be purchased on-site in Walmart stores.

Ease of Use

Walmart gift cards feature reloadable balances, making them ideal for both gift-giving and as budgeting tools. There is no expiration date attached to these cards and there is no fee for purchasing the card beyond the amount of the balance placed onto the card. In other words, buying a card with a $200 balance will only cost the purchaser $200 unless the card is purchased online and there are resulting shipping and handling charges for the card to be sent through the mail.

Cardholders can check balances online or over the phone by calling 1-888-537-5503. Clerks at Walmart and Sam's Club locations can also swipe gift cards to find out the available balance.

The cards can be used online at both Walmart.com and SamsClub.com. Walmart gift cards can also be used on-site at Walmart and Sam's Club stores. Multiple gift cards can be combined to make a single purchase.

Walmart Gift Cards Whimsical Designs

Although non-ornate gift cards are available through Walmart, there are also quite a few designs to choose from that either correspond with a holiday, special event or feature a fun motif. Not all gift card designs are available throughout the year and availability within stores varies from store to store.

  • Holiday Gift Cards: Walmart offers a wide variety of card designs for the holiday season. Interesting cards include scratch-and-sniff cards featuring a gingerbread house image and cards featuring the Peanuts cartoon characters gathered around a Christmas tree. There are also gift cards with more simplistic designs.
  • Special Occasion Gift Cards: Birthdays, graduations and new baby designs are available for prepaid Walmart cards. These cards allow the purchaser to buy cards specific to the occasion. Examples include cards with images of baby booties to congratulate new parents and cards with images of cupcakes with candles for birthdays. There also gift cards available with images appropriate for a variety of occasions, such as cards that simply say "Congratulations!" without a specific design.
  • Gift Cards in Other Languages: Gift cards are available with both English and Spanish text. Cards featuring Spanish text can be purchased both online and within participating stores.
  • Celebrities and Characters: Walmart offers a variety of gift cards featuring popular celebrities and characters. Examples include Hannah Montana gift cards and Shrek characters from the Disney movies. These cards are popular choices for purchases for children.

eGift Cards

Walmart offers eGift cards that allow recipients to shop Walmart online. These cards are not available within stores, but they are sent through the mail to the recipient. A variety of designs are available for these gift cards.

Dual Spend Gift Card

Walmart offers a gift card that is made specifically for parents of college students. The card is purchased as two separate cards; one is for the college student to use for purchases and the other card is designed for parents to use in order to add cash to the balance. The cards are purchased together and have a perforation down the middle, allowing the parents to have one card and the student to have the other.

Other Gift Cards Available at Walmart

In addition to the Walmart prepaid gift cards, other gift cards can be purchased at Walmart stores and at the Walmart website. Other gift cards that can be purchased through Walmart include prepaid cards for:

  • Pizza Hut
  • AMC Theatres
  • TGI Friday's

Thanks for sharing your story. Your situation really shows the downsides of many gift cards. Remember that giving a gift card can be a hassle for the receiver and, the receiver may have to pay fees to use the card.

The prepaid Walmart gift cards are very misleading and frustrating. I received one as a Christmas gift. This sticker on it says to go online or call to activate it. Online only lets you purchase one. When calling, you have to speak to a representative of which they make you give all kinds of personal information to include a credit card application before activating the card. My husband an I were very upset about this, but we didn't have a choice since we didn't want the $50 gift card to go to waste. On top of that they charge you a monthly fee just to use it. A Gift card is suppose to be a gift, not a hassle. The person that got it for me was upset as well. He had no idea about all the details involved. He was espeically frustrated that he had to pay about 9 dollars for it when the pre paid gift cards at other locations only charge 2 or 3 and don't come with all the hassle.
