The good news is that, by Federal law, you are entitled to get a copy each year of your credit report without cost from each of the three national credit bureaus. Experts recommend checking your credit reports from all three credit bureaus at least once each year for errors.
How to Obtain a Copy of Your Credit Report Online
The easiest and fastest way to get a copy of your credit report is to visit the websites of each of the three largest credit bureaus and request a copy of the report they have on file.
All Three Reports From One Source
You can claim all three free credit reports at one time at AnnualCreditReport.com. The website will give you instructions on how to verify your identity and gain you access to your credit report file. This process will include steps asking you to:
- Verify your personal information including your name, address, and Social Security number.
- Input the number on your Driver's License or other state-issued identification.
- Answer a series of questions to further ensure that you are the person about whom the credit report is compiled. This may include asking you questions about your mortgage, car loan or a line of credit.
Once you go through this process, the credit report is displayed for you online. You can scroll through it or click through the sections. It is a good idea to print a copy of your credit report for your files. Be prepared to print a long report - reports can have as many as 30 pages.
Credit Reports for Children
To request a credit report for a child under the age of 13, parents will need to use a specific form from the credit bureaus or from AnnualCreditReport.com.
Credit Score
Credit scoring is not a part of the credit report. The credit score is available from the credit bureaus for an additional fee.
Other Ways to Request Your Credit Report
While the Internet is the fastest method available, you may wish to request your report by phone or mail. It may take as many as 15 business days for the credit bureau to send your report after they receive your request.

There is a simple verification process that is done over the phone through an automated service. Answer the questions as clearly as possible.
Once your identification is verified, you can request mail delivery and provide an address to which you want to have the credit report mailed.
You can also contact Experian, Equifax or TransUnion directly by phone and request a copy of your credit report be mailed to you.

To request your credit report by mail you can visit the AnnualCreditReport.com website and obtain a request form. After you have printed and completed the form, mail it to:
