Gift Giving Credit Cards

From LoveToKnow Creditcards

For a birthday, the holidays or just because, gift giving credit cards are a great way to show love and appreciation. These are not typical credit cards. They look like them, but they carry just a one time limit that is prepaid. They work much like gift certificates, but are in the shape of a credit card. Giving these as gifts can be a good way to give a hard to find individual a gift they will appreciate; however, you should still be creative when giving them.

How Gift Giving Credit Cards Work

Head to your favorite store and purchase a gift credit card, or gift card. You will pay the retailer the value of the card upfront in order to obtain the card. Then, you can give it to anyone you would like to. They can use the card up to the limit you have prepaid at the retailer from which you bought the card. The benefit of giving these gift cards is that you don't have to give your family and friends the impersonal gift of cash. In addition, virtually everyone loves these cards over getting a pair of slippers or a tacky tie they will not wear.

The only downside to giving gift cards is that they can be expensive and it is hard to find discounts on them. If you enjoy shopping and getting a discount for a great gift, this can't happen with gift cards. It is rare to get discounts on full value gift cards, though there are some options to consider.

Tips for Giving Gift Cards

When it comes to giving gift cards, do take the time to choose the right one every time. Just like buying a present that no one will appreciate, you can make some costly mistakes with gift cards.

Giving Great Gift Cards

Most retailers do not offer refunds on them. If Uncle John likes to hunt, he may not do well with a gift certificate to a video game store (unless they have a great hunting game for him!)

Here are some other tips for giving the best credit card gift cards:

  • Give a bank-issued card: When you are not sure where to get a gift card for your loved one, choose a bank-issued card. These are available to use anyplace that the card's logo is accepted. American Express, MasterCard, and Visa offer them through various commercial banks. Be aware of any fees with these cards.
  • Use them: Some gift giving credit cards have expiration dates. If they are held onto for too long, they may expire and lose their value. Be sure that you check the value of the card by calling the number of the card prior to cashing it in.
  • Buy from reputable retailers: Do not buy gift cards from just any company. Be sure to buy them from trusted companies you don't believe are going out of business. Avoid buying from third parties whenever possible. If you do buy from third parties, make sure of the value of the gift card prior to using it or giving it away.
  • Make it Personal: Personalize the gift card as much as possible. Get a big box and pack it into the box with lots of tissue paper. Get a special envelope for it. Get as creative as you can to help make sure the gift card is still a special gift that shows you care.

Gift giving through the use of these credit cards is a good option, especially when you take the time to dress it up and make it meaningful. Choose cards from companies that you trust and be sure to give them to people who will appreciate and use them.

Antonio, you may want to consider visiting a local financial institution to purchase a prepaid card and then send it to your friend in the United States. Check with a nearby bank to see if they offer this product.
