Disney Credit Card

From LoveToKnow Creditcards

To put a little magic in their spending habits, Disney lovers everywhere turn to the Disney credit card. With a variety of rewards specifically geared toward Disney retailers and resorts, there is no better way to manage your credit and have fun at the same time.

Disney cardholders can redeem great Disney travel benefits.

About the Disney Credit Card

As more and more retailers pair up with major credit card companies to entice consumers to frequent their preferred locations, it is no surprise that Disney has offered its own credit card. Financed by Chase, the Disney Visa is accepted at more than 25 million locations worldwide. Because it is a reward card, each purchase helps consumers earn incentives sponsored by Disney. Unlike many reward cards that permit cardholders to redeem rewards at a variety of merchants, the Disney Dream Reward Dollars are only valid at specified Disney locations, including Disney hotels, theme parks, and for applicable Disney merchandise, such as toys and DVDs. Cardholders earn $1 in rewards for every $100 worth of purchases, with an annual cap of $750.

As a Visa card, the Disney credit card also offers premium benefits such as emergency card replacement and travel accident insurance, both of which are beneficial for anyone traveling to crowded resorts or theme parks.

Other reward benefits for this retailer card include selected discounts at Disney theme parks, free stroller rentals with paid admission to certain parks, and exclusive meet-and-greet character events that can make an ordinary vacation into an extraordinary one. For a limited time, new cardholders may also be eligible for a free $15 Disney gift card, which is redeemable at many Disney locations across the country, as well as aboard a Disney cruise.

Disney-Specific Cards

Prior to March 31, 2003, interested consumers could apply for a Disney-specific credit card that was only valid at select Disney retailers. While applications for these limited cards are no longer accepted, cardholders can continue to use their existing cards at appropriate locations.

Applying for a Disney Card

Applying for a Disney credit card is simple: a secure form is available online, or consumers can call 1-800-728-3095 for personalized service. Applicants have their choice of themed card designs, including Cinderella’s Castle, a vintage Mickey pose, Bambi, Tinkerbell, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, or a basic red “pixie dust” card. As with any credit card processing, approval is based on the applicant’s credit history and other financial factors.

Low Rate Disney Visa Credit Card

Every credit card includes a myriad of numbers about fees, interest rates, and other pertinent details. The basic information (as of October 2006) is as follows:

  • Annual Fee: none.
  • Annual Percentage Rate: 0% during 12 month introductory period, 0% on qualified vacation packages for six month promotional period, and ranging from 14-20% thereafter.
  • Cash Advance APR: 24.24%.
  • Late Fees: $14-34 depending on card balance in conjunction with 24.99% APR on late payments.
  • Transaction Fees: 3% for cash advances with a minimum fee of $5; 3% on balance transfers with a minimum of $5 and a maximum of $50 in fees.
  • International Transaction Fee: 3% of transaction in U.S. dollars.
  • Over Limit Fees: $29 plus 24.99% APR on overage balances.

Note: Interest rates and fees vary depending on applicant’s credit and payment history and are subject to change at any time.

Not the Most Magical Vacation

While a Disney credit card may be able to help consumers realize their most magical dreams, they must also be wary of the high number of restrictions and limitations on the card’s various rewards. For example, while cardholders can get discounts at participating Disney theme parks, those discounts only apply after a minimum pre-tax charge and are not valid on a wide range of merchandise, including gift cards, Disney Dollars, film, DVDs, and other related merchandise. Certain stores and restaurants may be excluded from the discount entirely, and the specific details of what is and is not discounted vary depending on the park. While these restrictions may seem excessive, cardholders can often use their Disney Dream Reward Dollars with fewer limitations.

In Conclusion

For dedicated Disney fans, the Disney credit card is the opportunity to manage credit while earning rewards from favorite retailers and Disney vacation options. Though the card has its limitations, with responsible usage it can be a valuable tool for any consumer.
