Your Business

The type of business you are running may help you decide which payment software you need. The needs of a small business retailer will be different than someone who has an Internet commerce environment.

The way you run your business can also affect your software choices. Do you need a software program that integrates accounting features or an order entry system? It may help to write down all of your needs before you begin researching your software options.

Credit Card Payment Software Programs

Semicron Systems makes a variety of programs. Most software programs can cost anywhere from $250 to $500 and this is in addition to credit card processing fees. These Windows based software programs include:

  • PC Charge Express - This software program allows merchants to accept credit cards, loyalty cards, debit cards, checks and stored value cards. It is an integrated program that combines security and reporting functions in an easy to use format.
  • PC Charge Pro – This is considered a good choice for MOTO (mail order/telephone order) merchants as well as other merchants. This program is similar to PC Charge Express but has more features. It also has the capability to accept Discover and American Express cards. This program can also be used with dial-up or cell phone connections so you can make sales just about anywhere.
  • PC Charge Payment Server - A top of the line credit card payment program for a variety of users, this Windows based program can be used with all types of connectivity. It can be used as a stand-alone system or to integrate an existing POS (point of sale) system. The Master Book and Ship Module allows MOTO merchants to store information so that it doesn't need to be inputted repeatedly. User-level passwords give merchants control over the use of the system.

Fake Brains manufactures the ChargeScout payment software. Their software can be run from any PC and is simple to use. The ChargeScout software can be accessed on a stand-alone computer or across a network. Reports can be run as frequently as needed and merchants can assign multiple passwords and accounts for each user. A benefit of this particular program is that you do not need an Internet gateway. Transactions are sent directly to your processor at no additional charge.

Free Processors

If you are looking for a simple and low-cost solution to processing credit cards for your business consider using Charge.com. This site offers:

  • Free software
  • Free setup
  • Free technical support
  • Shopping cart software

This software allows you to process all types of credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express and Diners Club. You may also accept checks with this online software.

Merchant Accounts

Once you have your payment software you will still need a merchant account unless you are using a system like Charge.com, which processes your transactions as well. A merchant account is usually easy to obtain, though it typically takes 1-2 weeks for a merchant application to be approved. The application can range in cost from under $100 to $300 or more, depending upon the services you require. Applications to accept Discover, American Express and Diner's Club cards typically cost $50 to $75 each in addition to the fees for setting up Visa and MasterCard.

There are many processors that accept applications online. You may also apply to your local bank if you hold a business account there. A few of the processors that accept online applications include:

Increase Profits

If you currently do not accept credit cards for your business you are probably already aware of the vast amount of profits you may be missing out on. Most customers spend more money on purchases when they use a credit card instead of cash or a check. It is simply easier to splurge when using a credit card since the impending bill can seem relatively intangible until it arrives at the end of the statement cycle. In order for you to maximize your potential profits you need to allow customers to use credit cards at your establishment. Many customers will also appreciate the convenience of being able to use credit cards when making a purchase at your business.

Although it is true that you will have to pay initial fees to set up the programs and equipment necessary to allow your business to accept credit cards – and most likely pay a recurring service charge or per-purchase fee – these fees will probably be more than worth it when compared to your increased profits. Be sure to carefully compare the various software programs available to find the most suitable program at the lowest price possible.
