Credit Card Machines

From LoveToKnow Creditcards

Credit card machines are an essential part of doing business. Most customers today rely on combination debit/credit cards or credit cards for most of their transactions. If you own or manage a business that frequently has single transactions for more than $20, or just want to offer your customers more convenience, consider getting a machine. It can mean the difference between a paying customer and someone who “just looks.”

Types of Credit Card Machines

Several types of terminals are available to use in your business.

Traditional Unit

The basic model has a magnetic strip reader, small display, and keypad in order to type in amount of sale, price of gas, manually enter a credit card number if necessary, and other information.

Wireless Unit

This kind of machine is not necessary if you plan to keep the machine on the counter or in the same spot the entire usage time. However, for those with a mobile business, such as like taxi drivers or seasonal businesses, it can be an attractive and flexible option. Before purchasing, take into consideration battery life and weight. Find out if the warranty will cover accidental situations, e.g. being dropped, run over or stolen.

Software-Based Unit

Software-based swiping options are usually found in a computer or similar technology that handles transactions, processes orders, and does basic computing for a business. This can come in handy in many types of business situations, but especially ones where purchasing more than one piece of equipment takes too much room, is too costly or when you process a lot of phone orders.

All machines should be able to be programmed to reach different merchant accounts. Additionally, most machines come with provider help numbers in case you run into a problem with the machine and cannot complete a transaction due to faulty electronics. This is a different number than the one you would call if there was a problem with the processing of the credit card.

Other Considerations

Before purchasing, see what other features you may like to have on your model. These extra features can mean added business.

  • Debit card acceptance for those with PINs
  • Gift card acceptance
  • Address verification system

Don't forget to purchase a printer to go with the machine. Some units come with a printer conveniently attached.

Look into a company and machine that can be easily updated should new technology become available before you are ready to purchase a new machine.

Purchasing a Machine

When you are ready to purchase a machine, think about going through your merchant account provider. They usually come all ready programmed.

  • If you choose to go through someone else, however, be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, because they usually are.
  • Know the return policy if it should turn out to be a faulty unit.
  • Consider going with a local business or supplier, because you can get faster service and training for employees.
  • Pay for a machine outright. Financing or leasing will end up costing much more than just purchasing a unit itself.

One of the first places to check out types of machines is through account providers like Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and others. Brick-and-mortar stores like Staples also offer machines for purchase and usually have a good return policy as well.
