AT&T Universal Card

From LoveToKnow Creditcards

Citibank is the funding issuer for the AT&T Universal Card. There are several types of cards in this offering: Platinum, Rewards, and Student Platinum and Rewards.

AT&T Universal Card

One Major Difference

While the Platinum and Rewards cards are similar, main variation is the annual percentage rate and how it is computed.

Interest Rate Comparison
Card Type0% APR TermApplies For Standard APR
Platinum12 mos.All balances11.33%
Rewards12 mosTransfer balances only11.57%
Student6 mosTransfer balances only17.81%

When Interest Rates Change

Every mention of interest rates in the AT&T Universal Card terms of service states that all rates are variable. This means the annual percentage rate can change at the discretion of the issuer.

The rates as of November, 2006 are:

  • 23.31 percent for cash advances
  • As high as 32.31 percent on accounts in default status. (Default is defined as late payment or exceeding the credit limit.)

Rewards Trade Off

AT&T Universal Card Platinum members receive zero percent APR on all balances for 12 months. Rewards cardholders only receive zero percent on balance transfers.

Instead, AT&T Universal Card Rewards members receive ThankYou points. This marketing program offer varies depending on the time of enrollment.

Pointed Details

Although the details may change, here is a general outline of how to earn points with the Rewards card:

  • 1 point earned for every dollar spent on purchases
  • 5 points earned for very dollar spent on eligible purchases
    • Eligible purchases include certain purchases made through online retailers such as Best Buy, Target, Sharper Image, and Eddie Bauer
  • 6,000 points, if the first purchase is made within the first three months
  • Unspecified points when booking travel through Expedia

A maximum of 75,000 points are allowed in any calendar year.

In the terms of service, it states that it might take one or two billing cycles before the points appear on the customers account. The points cannot be redeemed until they are posted.

Point Redemption

As with all such programs, the items available and the number of points necessary for redemption can change. Here are a few random examples in the various point categories (as of this writing):

  • 1,500 points earns you a $10 Barnes and Noble, Foot Locker, or Blockbuster gift card
  • 2,500 points earns you five 60 minute prepaid AT&T phone cards
  • 4,000 points can be traded in for a Spalding horseshoe set
  • 6,000 points translates into a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate
  • 10,000 points can be redeemed for a $100 Target gift card
  • 38,000 points adds up to a $250 statement credit
  • 69,800 points translate into a Sony DVD Camcorder

Cardholders should remember that it might be less expensive to purchase the products instead of receiving them through Reward points. The amount of purchases necessary to accumulate a large number of points will have more value of the card’s balance is paid in full each month.

Free Phone Calls

Holders for the Universal card also earn free phone calls.

  • Customers receive two free inquiries to directory assistance each month.
  • AT&T Universal Card members receive a free 30-minute phone call every month.

Read the terms of service carefully before making these calls. Not all locations apply in the ‘free’ program, and rates are higher if the call is made from a pay phone or from some mobile phones.

Cardholders can access their statements online and view unbilled activity. They can also pay other bills with the AT&T Universal Card, and recive customized account alerts via email.

Wireless Phone Insurance

If a wireless phone is lost or stolen, it is covered by insurance. A clause in the terms of service indicates that:

  • A $50 deductible applies
  • Maximum reimbursement $100

AT&T Universal Card Fees

Using a credit card does not come without credit card fees. This card is no exception. Fees incurred may include:

  • Annual Fee: None
  • Cash Advance: 3 percent of advanced amount.
  • Balance Transfer: 3 percent of transferred amount up to a $75 maximum charge
  • Late Fee: $29

Summary

The AT&T Universal card has been around for years. Its program offerings do not stand out significantly from other credit card choices available. It is most important to check the terms, fees, and conditions of every card issuer to determine the best choice for that individual customer.
